Case Study

Client: Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead

Project: Dedworth Manor Youth Centre

Need: spacious and robust building for communal youth activities.

The building needed similar aesthetic qualities to that of a traditionally built design. Time was also a large factor with as little time on site as possible a requirement. Finally the client expressed concern regarding vandalism due to the buildings location and use as a youth centre for teenagers. They required preventative measures to be designed into the building.

Solution: Rollalong's permanent building solutions were particularly suited to this project due to their flexible design capability.

The exterior brick cladding included intricately patterned brickwork which complimented and highlighted the large arched windows and accentuated the building's attractive traditional appearance.

The hipped roof is clad with interlocking concrete tiles and is constructed from trussed raters forming a steeply pitched roof.

Internally the building is flush jointed, decorated and carpeted throughout, giving the youth centre an attractive and modern interior.

Rollalong's fast track programme offered the perfect solution to the client's accommodation problems. Three quarters of the building work was carried out in our quality controlled factory environment, dramatically reducing the on-site time. Rollalong site management worked with Rollalong accredited sub-contractors to ensure the works were tightly programmed and controlled with minimum disruption.

A number of anti-vandal features were incorporated. To prevent casual roof access, the down pipes were set into the building and the roof structure was designed to have deep over-hanging eaves.

To strengthen and protect the internal walls from any damage impact a layer of plywood was incorporated into the wall structure.

Robust and durable materials were used throughout the building, with particular attention paid to the ablution areas where high quality, durable fixtures and fittings were used.

Duration: The building was completed in just 19 weeks.

Client comment: "I had historically always preferred traditional construction methods, but the design and build quality of the Youth Centre is so high that I now believe Rollalong's permanent solutions rival those of traditional building methods, especially when a short build time is a requirement."
