Client: UK Detention Service
Main Contractor: Tilbury Douglas Construction
Project: Harmondsworth
Immigration Detention Centre
Need: To
provide secure office and administration facilities for both staff
and visitors alike.
Solution: A
three storey 2,900m2 steel framed building was manufactured in Rollalong's
quality controlled factory. The building was delivered to site in
modules and deployed quickly at a rate of 315m2 erected each day.
Overall, the project took under a quarter of the time of a traditional
construction programme.
In achieving this, there was absolutely no compromise on building
design or quality and 60 year design life certification was provided
ensuring that the modular structure achieved equivalence to traditional
build. The building had also to achieve specific standards of robustness
and anti-terrorist resistance. It includes provision for concrete
floored plant rooms (13.5 KN/m2 loading) at roof level. Internally
the building consists of both open plan areas and partitioned office
space.
The building provides an example of the increased use of prefabrication
in delivering permanent, blockwork clad traditional buildings following
many of the Egan recommendations in terms of increased speed, quality
and reduced cost.
Duration: Rollalong completed the manufacture and construction
of the modular units in 4 months.
