Client: Bournemouth Borough Council,
Dorset
Project: Linwood
School, Bournemouth
Need: To
provide new facilities that complement existing buildings. The new
building will be used to provide a safe learning unit for autistic
and visually impaired children.
Solution: A
new single storey permanent modular building was provided and finished
in brick cladding to complement the existing buildings. A 45 degree
pitched roof was supplied with natural 'roof' lighting. Every entrance
and fire exit has been fitted with landings and ramps for wheelchair
access. Offset timber fencing was provided, encircling the building,
to give protection to the children in the play area. This fencing
also helps to deflect the noise from the neighbouring areas.
Internally, the building has enhanced noise reduction features including
robust impact resistant walls that have additional sound insulation.
Every door has been designed to have finger protection and push
plates, which are colour contrasting, to help visually impaired
children.
The building was manufactured in Rollalong's quality controlled
factory, including the internal fit out and installation of all
mechanical and electrical services prior to delivery to site, erection
and connection to mains services.
Duration: The project took just four months to complete.
Client comment: "The modular system not only
provides a cost effective solution to the provision of limited financial
resources but also provides a new structure which has complemented
existing structures by using traditional quality materials."
