Client: Joint
Services Unit at Northwood, the MOD operating through WS Atkins
Defence Estates
Project: Northwood
- Phase 1
Need: New
living accommodation for around 250 Senior Ranks and Officers to
replace existing redundant buildings and reduce the need for external
B&B and hotel accommodation.
Solution: Three
double storey accommodation blocks were constructed, providing en-suite
single living accommodation and associated facilities. Rollalong
provided a turnkey solution and met the projects requirements
in terms of the need to deliver high quality accommodation within
a demanding time scale. The solution provided favourable whole life
costs and will accrue an anticipated saving of more than £8
million over a five year period compared with alternative accommodation
costs and repairs to existing buildings.
Rollalong won the contract to provide living accommodation which
would be rented by the MOD over a five year period for only £5
million, with an option to extend the rental agreement.
The accommodation has a guaranteed life of 10 years and, if desired
with the installation of alternative extend cladding and can easily
be extended to between 40 and 60 years.
It consists of highly specified single fully fitted en-suite rooms
housed in two, two storey buildings which had to be installed in
a confined terraced site. They incorporate domestic facilities such
as drying rooms, bathrooms, washing machines, kitchenettes and store-rooms.
Central heating and hot water is provided by a gas fired boiler
in each building, and individual thermostatically controlled radiators
in each room contribute to energy savings.
Rollalong also undertook all associated ground works, landscaping
and surrounding pedestrian facilities.
Duration: The contract was secured in April 2000 and the
complete accommodation complex was handed over just 24 weeks later
