Ridgeway House – Rutherford Appleton Laboratories
Ridgeway House was designed for use by scientists and engineers from around the world who attend Rutherford Appleton Laboratory to carry out research into particle physics and space based astronomy.
The accommodation needed to be built to a very high specification, with enhanced sound attenuation between rooms and a full blackout facility to enable scientists to rest between shifts.
The 3-storey guesthouse was constructed using 45 modules to provide 62 high quality en-suite bedrooms with linen stores, ironing rooms and general storage.
Working with Mansell Construction, Rollalong was responsible for the design, manufacture, and installation and commissioning of the modules.
A single module created 2 large bedrooms with ensuites. There are a mix of bedroom types with 54 singles, 5 doubles and 3 disabled bedrooms.
The total Rollalong programme was 26 weeks; 10 weeks to manufacture and 16 weeks to install and handover. The installation required minimal on-site labour, storage and equipment, resulting in less noise and disturbance to the local community.
Aspire Defence – GH0600, who said modular couldn’t be attractive?
Sitting alongside the imposing Government House Officers’ Mess building in Aldershot, is the latest building from Rollalong for Aspire’s Project Allenby/Connaught. Asset GH0600 has been sympathetically designed to complement Government House itself, using design elements from the Arts & Crafts movement of the early 20th Century.
The new building is home to Senior and Junior officers in en-suite single living accommodation. As with all of our military buildings it includes the normal bomb blast protection inherent within our design.
Using a modular solution wasn’t the obvious choice for GH0600 due to the need to match the existing mess building. However Aspire, having benefitted from a 5 year relationship with Rollalong, recognised that in this restricted site an offsite solution would deliver significant programme and cost benefits.
The unique architecture presented a challenge to the Rollalong design team as the rooms were fitted with sloping ceilings/walls and dormers in our factory ready to receive aesthetic cladding on site.
Peter & Painter House – Urban Apartments
A Brownfield development for Tower Hamlets Community Housing to provide quality Social Housing accommodation in 24 one-bedroom and 14 two-bedroom flats.
The L-shaped residential building was constructed using 76 modules that cascade from 5 down to 2 storeys on a concrete podium. Painter House is shared ownership apartments and Peter House is general need rental apartments. The ground floor is utilised as office space by Tower Hamlets Community Housing.
Rollalong designed, manufactured, installed and commissioned the modules. The design used 2 basic flat types with integral balconies and walkways.
The modules were installed over 3 weeks at times to suit the traffic on one of London’s busiest roads. Minimal on-site labour, storage and equipment were required. Noise and disruption to local residents was kept to a minimum as a result.
